Cultural Spectrum

The Cultural Spectrum Model understands cultural change as a continuum rather than a simple opposition between preservation and change. Societies may move through exchange, assimilation, acculturation, adaptation, appropriation, alienation and dissolution. Not every external influence produces cultural loss; assimilation can occur without abandoning civilizational identity. The crucial question is whether a society absorbs new elements through its own cultural framework or gradually becomes disconnected from it. Cultural exchange strengthens civilizations when adaptation is accompanied by continuity. It becomes alienation when borrowed forms replace the society’s capacity to interpret and reproduce itself. The Cultural Spectrum Model therefore studies how cultures change, absorb and sometimes lose themselves.
